My name is Roberta Hopkinson and I carried my son Nicholas Roland for nine months and he was a still born baby. PA will not issue me a birth certificate because he did not breathe outside of my body and there fore is not a baby and was not born though I carried him full term, named him, held him kissed him sang to him and buried him. 27 other states offer the Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth but the fight in PA has been going on for almost 10 years. Please, if you have suffered such a tragedy, help us make the government listen... our children can not speak so we have to speak for them. We must not let them get away with deminishing our pain and suffering by telling us we did not give birth... Please go to the petition site and sign. Contact your Congressman and Senator. Tell them your story, make them feel your sadness and pain, make them listen to us. Thank you all for taking the time to hear me, and thank you for any help you can give. God bless you.

In the state of PA the Abortion Control act states no abortions after 24 weeks, so we mentioned that but the senators response was the laws are all interchangeable!!! WHAT??

I'm sorry that you have to go through all that in your home state.
Where I live, @20 weeks & over a birth is classed as a still birth if the baby doesn't breath on it's own & you get a birth/death certificate automatically after the forms are filled in at the hospital (I'm in Melbourne, Aus). In fact, my mother (quick thinker she is) at the time even got the special birth certificate they offer for parents who lose their children.
I think that's just cruel to tell parents that their child doesn't get classed as a baby when they're born, especially when the bub is full term.

p.s i was also thinking..They wont let you get an abortion after a certain point in your pregnancy because they consider it a "fetus" at that point.

Medical Dictionary

Main Entry: fe·tus
Variant: or chiefly British foe·tus /'fEt-&s/
Function: noun
Inflected Form: plural fe·tus·es or chiefly British foe·tus·es or foe·ti /'fEt-"I/
: an unborn or unhatched vertebrate especially after attaining the basic structural plan of its kind; specifically : a DEVELOPING HUMAN from usually three months after conception to birth —compare EMBRYO

So, by law you can't terminate a "fetus" after a certain point, because it's considered a child...a human...a being. So, why wouldn't they offer a birth certificate.

I had a stillbirth in 2006. We were not even asked about a birth certificate. I guess i never really even thought about it. They do not offer birth certificates here, i'm assuming. (never really looked it up) But now that you mention it, it got me thinking. Even if a child isn't born Breathing. That child is still BORN. We still gave BIRTH to that child. Why would they offer a death certificate, but not a birth certificate. Hmm..so, because of your post, i agree with you and will continue to help you fight.
