How have you looked for help?

When I first discovered last year that my (now ex-)husband had molested my daughter throughout her childhood until age 12, the first place I went looking for help was Google. I searched for things like "my husband molested my daughter" and "my husband is a child molester" and "mothers of incest victims". I am still surprised by how little help is available. It took me a couple of months to find a counselor with the right experience and training. I know now that there are no local support groups in my area for non-offending mothers of incest victims. I've found a few books, but most of them are 20 or 30 years old. Mostly what I've found are single pages on a website that is primarily for the victims. There's actually more for the perpetrators than for the mothers.

I'm curious to hear how some of you have searched for help and what kind of help have you found?

Hi Grace,
I have found the same amount of information as you. You are so right, there is not much out there for moms of children who have been sexually abused by their biological dads. Like you, I am a mom of two beautiful children who were both abused by their dad. I was completely unaware of what was going on. I left him because he wanted different things in life than what I wanted. That was nearly 11 years ago. Currently, my oldest is very angry and feels that I should have known that something was wrong or suspected something. She feels that I did not protect her from this monster. Honestly, there weren't any signs of abuse. People who sexually abuse children cover their tracks. I was deceived by the very person I trusted and loved. I have reached out to the Children's Aid society in my area to get some advice on where I can turn. There is a centre in my community for victims of sexual abuse and they provide counselling to family members of a victim of sexual abuse. I wish you the best of luck through this difficult journey.
Take Care, N

I am so sorry to hear about what your daughter went through, Grace. I wish I had words to write that would ease your heartache and the burden you’re feeling right now. But I’ll certainly be praying for you and your daughter, asking the Lord to surround you with His perfect love, comfort, and peace. Also, have you considered contacting National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence – they may offer some help. Hugs!
