Nine year old mentally challenged son UP all Night.

I have a nine year old mentally retarded son. He has has many neurological problems. Recently he has been having problems staying asleep. He will fall asleep but wakes up many times during the night. He is loud and then won't go back to sleep. His neurologist has tried Melatonin on him, but that is not working. Anyone with this same problem and how did you resolve it? I need sleep and so does my sone.

Melatonin helps with falling asleep but it will not keep someone asleep if they don't have deep enough sleep. The only answer I know of for deeper sleep long term once asleep (basically, children like your son) is a tranquilizer. There are some pretty major side effects with them though so it's something to consider carefully. My oldest son doesn't sleep much, but he's not fatigued; we were told he has an early sleep cycle and also a short sleep cycle, which is an unusual combination, and a tranquilizer to have him sleep more typically will only cause him harm as a result. A doctor that works specifically with sleep (yes, neurology, but may not be the same one as you already have) should be able to help you.
