Hi Jen,
I have a 15 year old that we adopted when she was 13 months old, you wouldn't think that being tossed around in foster care during her first 13 months would make that big a difference, but two of her six foster homes abused and neglected her. We have spent years and years in therapy with her, we recently had to place her in a residential care facility and it was the hardest but best thing we have ever done. They were able to make real behavior changes with her, I think it took total lock down and removal of EVERYTHING for her to gain impulse control. You have to set very strict and solid boundaries, and most of all, you can't take anything personally, it isn't about you. You can't ever let them take control and get you to engage in any kind of battle, everyone loses then. It's hard, but it can be overcome. We just brought our daughter home after a six month program and we finally have a chance for a normal relationship.
