Trouble falling asleep

My 8-month-old has never been a great sleeper, but for the last week or two, we've been having an exceptionally hard time with him. He used to either fall asleep nursing or being rocked for naps and at night, and when he wakes up to eat at night, he nurses back to sleep. Now he still nurses back to sleep in the middle of the night, but he never falls asleep nursing anymore, and when we try to rock him, he screams and flails. Most of the time, he screams for a few minutes and then goes to sleep, but last night I rocked him for 45 minutes while he was screaming. We're not sure what's changed. We can't tell if he doesn't want to go to sleep, if he wants to be put to sleep a different way, or if there's something else wrong. We would appreciate any ideas and advice. We hate that he's crying, even when we're rocking him, but we're lost for what to do.

Teething is Erics problem now. He will fall asleep on my lap while I watch tv and he sucks his thumb. Otherwise I rock/ nurse/ sing/ stroke his skin to get him asleep. It is a royal pain in the butt, but I'd never let him cry and once I'm creeping out of his room and he is fast asleep it's all worth it :)

Sometimes my son will have a bad sleep week and give me trouble going down too. It could be a number of reasons such as teething or some other stress. Is your baby tired when you put him down? Maybe try pushing bed time an hour and see if it works. Or just lay down with him and see if he will drift off that way.
