Was it wrong to have my ring appraised?

I recently had my engagement ring appraised at a local jewelry store, and was told the stone is not a real diamond (I'm not a big jewelry person, but that would be nice!). My fiance is livid that I did this, and the consensus among "everyone he knows" is that I was wrong for doing that. I still wear the ring, as I feel it is symbolic of his love. But was I wrong to get it checked out?

@ Lil Bit: I took it in after a sizable argument where I was questioning his honesty, and the relationship. I'm not materialistic, but wanted to know the truth. No, he can't afford a real diamond, and that's fine with me. But I still hear about how wrong it was, even five months after that post (which was four months after it happened.)

We are still together. I still wear the ring, as it is symbolic of his love for me. But, a lot of repair work needs to be done, and open communication is definitely on the list. Thank you for your prayers, we'll need them!

What was your reasoning for taking it in? Maybe he couldnt afford a diamond. He is probably thinking you are materialistic. Honesty is a true testimate to a relationship. Hope you can both communicate your feelings openly. My prayers go out to you both.

No, i think that was resonable. I would have thought you would have been told if the diamond wasnt real.
