Is 5 too young for piano lessons?

Who here has a child who started piano lessons at 5? Do you think it was too early? Too late? Did you child get frustrated or overwhelmed? Thanks!

My 5 year old daughter is in piano lessons now. The teacher comes over and I give them their space so she is not distracted. She is getting good and has only taken them for 2 months now. It does depend on weather or not your child can identify letters and numbers good to read the music. HEY even I'm learning how to read music by listening to the instructor!! LOL

It depends on the teacher. Started my 5 year old on ukele and piano. Uke teacher was way too laid back, was not in control. Daughter lost interest within 60 seconds. Piano teacher is super fun. Even with that, it's difficult for my daughter to stay focused but the game approach really helps. The teacher makes all the difference in the world.

I think starting them young on anything is a great idea, when their minds are open to learning. Just keep it easy and don't let it get stressful, ask your child if they're even interested in learning, at 5 they will know, and don't push it. If it's not fun, and they don't have an interest, it's just not worth doing, if you're really into it, try again at an older age...they will only thrive if they are enjoying it & not feeling pressure

My daughter started piano lessons at 4 it all depends on what your child knows they have to know and be able to identify the alphabet and numbers.

The instructor suggested waiting until age 7 or 8, after children have the alphabet and basic math down pat, so as to avoid confusion with the mechanics of music. I'll wait a year or two and start my daughter on piano then. Thank you all for your responses!

I don't think it's too young.  I started at age 6 I think?  Ask the teacher if you can sit in on the first few lessons to observe.

5 is a great age to start lessons. Just make sure they have some fun and it's not too serious at this age.
