My 3 yr wakes up full of energy in middle of night....

My 3 yr old goes to bed between 7-8pm, wakes up at midnite-1am full of energy and ready to play. Some night only up for an hour other nights 4 hours. His doctor & friends told us to give him melatonin which seems to help him go to sleep but not sleep through the night.

He usually only takes one -two naps a week. Any one else having this issue and what helped you?

Some children need to be taught to sleep through the night and you do this by removing any stimulation from there room, black out the windows and have a bedtime routine that is stuck to.

Try not to give him any naps in the day as this will effect the time he needs to sleep at night. Make sure that he has some out door play late in the afternoon and that he is eatting plenty of fruit and vegetable. Try and cut out all junk food as much as you can and no chocolate after 3pm as this is a stimulent.

Give him a calm bath and a story and put him to bed. When he wakes tell him it is bed time and to go back to sleep. Do not reward him with hugs or kisses or a drink. Just tell him to go back to sleep and close the door. Continue to do this until he is quite. After three nights he should stop waking during the night as he has no reason to. If he is only going to get the same response from you there is no point in getting you up.

I have to stress a child that eats healthy does tend to sleep better than a child that eats high amounts of sugar or processed food, so start there. If he is already eatting healthy foods then work on the exercise in the afternoon and the calm bathtime routines.

Good Luck!
