I was just wondering if and when people started putting a pillow in toddlers crib. My son sleeps fine without one, but was thinking he may like one... any thoughts??

i have my joshy a pillow once he turn 18 months, because that is when i was told i didn't need to worry about sids risk anymore. he had been balling his sheet up and sleeping on it for about a month before hand. so i knew he wanted something to put his head on.

I'm a bad mom.. we have always placed a blanket over our daughter, and we keep 2 small pillows and a couple stuffed animals in her crib. They have been there since day 1.. as for sleeping on a pillow... our daughter still moves around so much at night I doubt she would use it if it were actually there, but I do find her actually sleeping on her monkey or with her head on one of the small pillows in the crib some nights... We will probably wait until we convert her crib to a bed to give her a real pillow, but it is cute because she will climb into our bed, lay on our pillows and want the covers pulled up over her.. monkey see monkey do.. It's really up to you, but I'd think that at this age, if you want to give him one, go ahead, and if he uses it, great, if not, no harm will come of it.

I just started with a pillow, he loves it. It's a little flat, got it from Ikea. I figure a bigger one when he's older.

With my first child we were more cautious and waited until she was 2. With the 2nd, he saw what his sister was doing so he has had a pillow at around 14 months in his crib. I recommend going to leaps and bounds website, they have small pillows for toddlers.

My daughter will be 2 in Nov. she's in her toddler bed but I haven't given her a pillow yet. She often uses a pillow when she naps on the living room floor. I'm curious too as to when to give her a pillow.

my daughter is 21 mths and we trie a pillow but i got way to scared and she really didn notice the difference. i would say no b/c of sids but if that is what gets him to sleep then go ahead!

I have the same answer as many of the mums on here. My daughter will be 2 in November and she hadnn't slept with a pillow until recently when she got a cold, I used one to prop her up to sleep better and have noticed now that her cold is gone she seems to sleep better with one, she tends to fall asleep sooner and sleep a bit longer. I think really its your choice. If you think your child might like one and your comfortable with the idea then try it and see how your LO likes it. If you dont want to try until a little later on thats fine too :)

I think that if he's happy leave him. My son has a pillow but this was introduced when he had a bad cold and I found he slept better with one.

My daughter is almost 21 months old and she doesn't have a pillow in her crib, however when she's out playing in the living room, we have a few different sized pillows around and she lays on them... but she mostly uses them as props and she only lays on them when she wants to let us know she's tired without admitting she's tired... but she hasn't tried taking one to bed with her, so we figure when she wants one in bed, she'll let us know...

Shane got a Pillow Pet for Christmas, and has been sleeping with it in his crib since he was 15 or 16 months. When I put him down he goes right to it and lays on it and hugs it. It is so cute!!!

our daugther uses a travel pillow (smaller and firmer) and we found a pillow cover that zips on (so I can still wash it, but don't worry about her getting tangled in it or something). she is in a toddler bed now. We gave her a pillow because she would wad her blankets up and sleep on them, and I figured a small firm pillow would be safer. If the child sleeps fine w/o one, I would not rush it.

I think since the cause of SIDS is so controversial (some say its the toxins in old crib mattresses, some say it is suffication caused by bedding items, some think it is a form of sleep apnea in children that goes undetected). I think the decision is your to make. You definitely dont want to take any risks with your children, however I believe that at this age (20 months) if my daughter couldnt breathe, she would struggle to find air.. a natural response to survival. She can move her head independently (unlike at 2 months old) and can get up out of bed and even go to the bathroom on her own, just like me. Good for you for seeking out what others are doing with their babes at this age.

My 20 mo daughter has had a pillow for a long time. Sometimes she uses it, sometimes not. She will also grab one of several stuffed animals to sleep on. She sleeps on a twin mattress so there is room for one but she did have a pillow in the crib.

All 3 of my kids had a pillow, blankets and stuffed animals in their cribs from about 6 months old (when they were sitting up, rolling, crawling etc.) The crib mattresses are not comfortable.... My babies slept great and were perfectly safe!

My daughter has had a small firm pillow in her crib since she was 15 months old. She is 21 months now and LOVES her pillows. She doesn't always use it, but likes to lay on it till she falls asleep.

If he is sleeping well without one then I wouldnt push it. My daughter is 20 months old and she started having a pillow in her bed when I orignially planned to conform her crib to a toddler bed, the pillow stuck but the toddler bed never did... i just made sure to get a real flat one and a fun sham .. she calls it her "bed" and when we go out of town I have brought it for her pack n play which has made it more like home and she sleeps better than she did without it (when out of town)

My little girl is still in her crib, mainly because she hasn't tried climbing out of it yet, so i figure i'll keep that form of containment as long as possible lol. And i don't use a pillow, but i do have a wedge type thing i got for when she was sick... it goes under the sheets and just props up the head area of the matress about an 2 inches... she sleeps fine, usually changing postion during the night so she's sideways anyways. She often falls asleep in our bed, however, and likes to use my pillow when she snuggles up.

My son loves his little pillow!! He always puts his head on it to lay down and finds it if he moves off it in the night.. He has had it since he was around 14 months. It seems to make him feel like a big boy because he knows we use pillows too..

My son is almost 21mths and has had a pillow since he was 18mths, when we switched him to a toddler bed. I didn't ever put one in his crib but, I noticed around 15mths whenever he would sleep in our bed he'd crawled up and sleep with his head on my pillow. At first I thought he just wanted to be close to me but, then I realized he was just using me for my pillow ;).

I asked my child health care Nurse about this, and she said not until they ask for one, or 7 years old. I gave my older son a pillow at 2.5 because of constant ear infections, and the elevation helps. My 20mth old has no pillow. The SIDS comment is correct. If you're unsure, don't.

My son did not have a pillow until about a month ago. He is 20 months and has been sleeping in a toddler bed since 19 months. His pillow is very thin and I do use a pillowcase for hygienic purposes. He did show signs of interest in pillows as other moms mentioned. He would pull sofa cushions down and crawl up to my pillow.

My son has had a pillow in his crib since 6 months bc he had chronic GERD so he needed to be elevated some. He loves having a pillow that he actually sleeps on his pillow (his turns the short way of the crib and sleeps on the entire pillow lol)!!! He can't sleep without one.

We co-sleep and I have noticed the past month or so my son will crawl up and put his head on my pillow before he falls asleep. Or he will get a pillow off the couch and lay on it in the living room. He is 20 months old now.

I had no place for my "Bobby Pillow" so I threw it in her crib and she loves it. Other then that she has regular pillows but doesn't sleep with them.

We have a thin pillow in the crib with Wes, he has one at his dayhome so we got one for our home and he seems to sleep better with it. He is in a toddler bed at his dayhome (has been since he was 15 months old) but hasn't "graduated" from his crib at home yet!!!

Hey I had the same question and what I did was I purchased a travel pillow they are a little more firmer than a regular pillow and of course smaller, and I put it in her crib the last week she was in it and then moved her to her toddler bed (she has been in her bed since she was 16 1/2 months old) and she sleeps fine either with it or without it. But she does love her pillow I find her hugging it some mornings. Great post about SIDS by one of the other moms but most of the time once a child reaches over 12 months old SIDS is normally not a problem but it still pays to be cautious (I didn't use a pillow case on her pillow in fear she would get her head in it some how. Good Luck and as any mom would say do what you feel is right.

I use to use a pillow because I liked them but my daughter use to pushed them away while sleep. Then around 14 months she start taking pillows off my bed and lay on them so she been using once since then. I think she only use it because she see everyone else use them; she falls asleep on her bed not the pillow lol

A couple months ago we out a fairly stiff small pillow in his crib because he was sick, and this helped keep his head elevated while sleeping. Now, he puts his head on his pillow when we place him the in the crib, but when we go to check on him before we go to bed, he's slid off the pillow! : )

My daughter has had a pillow for a couple of months now as I was having trouble getting her to sleep in her cot. I think the pillow has made it comfy and cosier for her, as she was used to sleeping on one when she came into our bed.

My son has ha da pillow in his crib since he was about 14 months......But SIDS doesnt reccomend using a pillow in a crib at all as it heightens the rick of SIDS
