My son is 2 months old & has started sucking his hand. Is this an indication of him being hungry 'cause he even sucks on his hand after a feed! Please help!

My 9 week old loves to do this as well. But his fingers are so long he gags himself, and is choking for a few seconds. However this happens when he's NOT sucking on his fingers too. He'll just start choking. Anybody know why this would happen?

My daughter is 10 weeks and she has also found her hands. She likes to suck on the knuckle so much that it sometimes gets a little red. At time, when she is in her swing we have to turn up the television in order to hear it over her sucking. She is very enthusiastic about it. She is doing it as much after having just eaten as she does long after a feeding so I am assuming that it doesn't have anything to do with her being hungry.

Hi.  The choking could be due to a cold, or he may have some reflux.  Perhaps get him checked by your doctor if it happens frequently.  My daughter was diagnosed with reflux after a choking episode, and she has been put on Infant Gaviscon, with good effect.  Are you breastfeeding?  If not, you can always buy a specially designed formula which is thicker than normal formula.  Just keep him upright after a feed for longer than you usually do to help the feed digest before putting him down to sleep.  Good luck.

The choking doesn't sound good. My son was just choking every now and then also, but I think it might have been spit up not making it's way out. And I can't remember for sure, but I think he did it a little while he had his cold, probably some drainage he didn't like going down his throat.

I dscussed this with the pediatrician because I would prefer my daughter to suck a pacifier instead of her thumb because to me it would be easier to break the paci habit.  Th epediatrician stated that if she wanted her thumb and would be a thumb sucker then she would have already found the thumb.  I receive weekly developmental updates from a website babycenter.com and this weeks article was about the milestone of infants finding their hands and the beginning of everything going to the mouth to be explored.  Maybe teh hand sucking does have to do with this as my daughter has begun to grab anything near her face and try to get it to her mouth.

Mine's doing that as well, on the brightside, at least my son isn't finding his thumb!

So I guess this is a normal thing since my 8week old daughter is doing the same thing! It started out with just sucking her index and middle finger but now she's going for the whole fist. She seems to just love it and it keeps her quiet so i can't complain. Besides, she looks cute as can be while she's doing it!! lol

I've got a hand muncher too. He's 10 weeks and really seems to be enjoying himself that way. You're right though, sometimes it's hard to know if he's chewing his hands just to chew his hands or if he's actually hungry.

My sons 2 months old aswell and hes taken to sucking his hand. I asked my mum why he does it and apparently it means hes trying to suck his thumb. Which i suppose is a good thing!!!

My daughter loves to suck her hands... I believe it is just something she enjoys doing.  She doesn't get fussy with it and appears totally content.  So I do not believe it is because she is hungry at all.

Thanks Tracy! That really helps as I was getting rather worried that I wasn't feeding him enough :)

Hi there

My daughter is doing the same.  Apparently this is them "finding their hands", and as they move their hands across their face, they stick their hands in their mouth to suck - so not always a sign of hunger!  It's a natural developmental process that will in time lead to them putting the toys (teethers etc) in their mouth when they start to hold these, so let them suck away!  Sometimes my daughter (10 weeks) gets a bit carried away and sticks her hand or fingers too far into her mouth and starts to gag!  But that's part of their development and certainly not unusual!
