My son has Found His Private Parts!

I'm wondering if anyone else's babies are doing the same thing....My son(born Oct.31/08) recently found his "peter", and is constantly wanting to touch it, pull it, twist, it, squeeze...all the while having the biggest smile on his face and cooing about it. At first it was funny and cute like when they find their toes or fingers.....but now as soon as I lay him down for a diaper change, he has his hand down there waiting for me to remove the diaper...I have to hold back his hand while I wipe, and the he just goes to town....I tried letting him do it for a bit, thinking he may get bored after a few minutes, and I've also tried distracting him(to no avail)......now when i put a fresh diaper on he struggles to try and keep his hand on his "peter" and cries dramatically when he can't get to it. Is anyone else dealing with this, too? It seems very early for it....just wondering if it's normal at this age for anyone else, too? Comments and/or any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

it's normally and they are boys the penis is their best friends for life... first off i wanted to let you know that one of the biggest deterrents for sex offenders is a child that uses the correct wordage for their private parts so you may want to teach him the correct words..my son is 5 as a baby we didn't really do anything other then pull his hands away while trying to change him... we've taught him that it's fine to touch his penis but it's too be done in his room with the door closed and locked by himself...

This is so normal!! I've joked that the male fascination with the penis starts very early. My twins do the same thing. Don't worry about it at all! They will continue to do it, although it makes changing a soiled diaper so much fun!

My son Tucker did/still does the same thing!! At first, like you, I thought it was cute. Then I got a little weirded out. And the type of person I am, went onto a website and asked about it. ( I think it was babycenter.com ) And they said that it is just naturally a sensitive area and not to worry about it!

Quoting Tanya:

Amanda, I swear I felt like I was reading a post I had written myself. Sounds just like my son. We distract him until after we are able to clean his penis and then we allow him his moment to get acquainted with it while we get the new diaper ready. This keeps him happy and we are still able to get diaper changes done. We just have to watch cause sometimes he can get pretty rough with it for the moment or two he has his hands on it.

i woulndt be concerned with him bring roughwith his penis...totally normal also i used to wonder when my son was little *h'es 5* how he wans't in pain with the way he pulled his penis

It is definitely normal. My son does it too. I read that you shouldn't make a big deal about it. If he begins to touch himself in public when he is older and it becomes embarrassing just talk to him when he can understand. Tell him that there is nothing wrong with what he is doing ( so you don't shame him) but he must do it in private. As for now there just boys. what can you do?

This is a funny thread LOL. My daughter does the same thing. I was very surprised at first, but I did a bit of reading and found that it is normal, and that it can be one sign of a list of signs for toilet training readiness. They are interested in where the wee comes from.

our son has also found his penis, and we also find it funny. he is ready and waiting at ever diaper change and also at bath time. we just tell him yea that's your penis the same as we do when he pulls his ear or ouch my hair. Although at times it looks like he's gonna pull the friggin' thing right off he hasn't hurt himself yet so we just let it be.

Your post made me laugh! My son LOVES when we change his diaper because then he's FREE! He loves to touch his "peter" and laughs when we wipe it when cleaning him. My husband and I always laugh about it but it got a bit embarrassing when we went for his 9 month well check and the Dr. checked his testicles and he laughed. I don't think the doctor picked up on it but I could feel my face getting red!

LOL, I freaked when my son did this, I immeadiately called my mom to ask her about it. She told me the same thing, that it was completely normal and that it was part of the discovery stage, just like finding their toes. It does make it hard to change his diaper. I usually give him a toy to keep his hands occupied, but this only works about 45% of the time. He loves to touch it when he's in the bathtub too, he goes between touching himself to playing with his bath toys to trying to pull up the drain stopper. It's CUTE! So don't worry, most kids go through this. :)

Hi Amanda! My son has been doing this for several months now, I remember being MORTIFIED that he had found his penis - but you know what, you don't want your son growing up thinking that it is a bad thing to touch his own body - that's how obsession and hiding behaviors will start. Just smile when he does it, and gently remove his hands if you need to change him. Maybe give him something else to keep his hands occupied, so to speak, when you are changing his diaper?

Bottom line - it's normal! :)

Rebecca, that's exactly what Kiera does! My husband and I just laugh! She gets the silliest grin on her face and then really concentrates in the tub!

my daughter does the same thing, even creeped out her father by touching and rubbing herself during a diaper change and putting on a huge grin...In the bathtup she rubs herself as well an looks up very cutely as if to say "Look what I found!"

On the other side of this, it's not only boys at this age. My daughter does the exact same! :) She even has her hands waiting down there during diaper changes as well. I allow her to explore herself when she wants. They are just learning their bodies.
