I am having identical twins due in October. I was told by my OB that fraternal twins are hereditary, but identicals are not. Beacuse it is just by chance that a single egg splits, causing identicals. Almost like an accident or a mutation, but a HUGE blessing!

There are no factors that increase your chances of having identical twins, even if there are identical twins in the family already, they are completely random. Fraternal twins are the kind that can run in families, but ONLY on the mother's side, because of how fraternal twins are conceived - by releasing two eggs. The husband's side of the family has no factor in your chances of having twins.

Congrats on the pregnancy! :)
