I agree, use your resources =) You'll find that some methods and ideas work well for your child and some don't. Even with the same diagnosis, no two children are the same, so just because something worked great for someone else, don't be discouraged if it doesn't work for your son. Keep your options open and make sure to try only one or two new things at a time and give it a a while before giving up and trying something else. If you find something that works...stick with it. Use the labels to get what you need for your family, but don't be absorbed by them. Think of them as a place to start and not an end. =)

The only advice I have is to tap into whatever services are available in your area, my son, Austyn, age 7, was just recently diagnosed (in February), with ADHD and PDD-NOS, and I feel the same way, shocked, but relieved. For so long, I thought his outbursts, and inappropriate behaviour were present because I was a poor mother, now I understand he simply hasn't learned what is and isn't appropriate because I didn't have the skills to teach him. We have recently started using social stories and powercards to help him learn to respond to situations differently, but we just started, so I don't even think it's been long enough to say how they work.
I'm finding though that I'm relieved that there's something I can do now.

hi amber-
thank you for your reply.
my son, lewis who is 6, has been diagnosed with adhd since age 4-and the specailists were the ones who said lewis has autism and they spent 2 yrs doing all the ados and allsorts of tests.
he is now in an asd unit at mainstream school, since sept '09-and he learned to read & write in 6months! amazing results.
yes we use pec cards,a visual timetable at home & school, plus the school use the TEACHH system.
we are trying to do everything we can as parents and i have been on a few asd & adhd courses.
add me as a friend if you like & we can talk further........?
thanks for your advice.
we are in the uk.
