Startles herself?

Hi, I'm new here. I have a 2.5yr old with PDD NOS and we're slowly but surely making progress with the communication. We've really been pushing the sign language, our main problem being that she refuses to use her hands for most things functional (other than eating or playing with beads). Recently she's eased up a bit and will sign if I do it hand over hand with her. For the past 3 or 4 days I've managed to get her to make a sign on her own and she's totally freaked out and flung herself on me for a huge hug. She doesn't scream or anything but her eyes go really wide and it looks like she's startled herself making the sign, and not neccessarily in a "wow look what I can do" kind of way. Has anyone else seen this before? I try and soothe her and reduce the reaction each time, that's the only reaction I can only think to make. It just confuses me! Also, I was thinking of putting wrist bands (the athletic type) on her since she loves the compression stuff and was sort of hoping the squeeze near her hands might make it more comfortable for her to use her hands more. Any similar experiences of thoughts?

This is a new one for me. I would be interested to know if the bands help. I did signs with Gage too and it was such a huge help. He was a "late talker" and it really helped me understand what he needed.
