Aah, a topic close to my heart. I have triplets. They slept in the same room till they were almost 5. One of my daughters developed a sleeping problem. She would wake up in the middle of the night, turn on all the lights and was bright eyed and bushy tailed. The only problem is that mom is not very social at 3 am ... that makes for a long day. So it really depends on how old the kids are. For my daughter, I started keeping track of her sleep schedule to see if I was overreacting of it was really happening every night and started recording the conditions. Then, when she was awake we started talking about what good sleep could do for her growing body and for mom's energy. I also told her it was normal to wake up several times a night but that we didn't get out of bed. To break what had become a habit, I basically set my alarm for 2:45 am. I waited outside their door. At the first sign of her being awake I would walk in, gently rub her back, tell her she was OK and make sure she stayed in bed. If she did, big party the next day. Mom had a lot of energy. Enough to make cupcakes etc. It took about 2 weeks and she had a new habit of staying in bed even if she was awake.

A regular night light can interrupt sleep, but a red light is reported to not interrupt the brain waves. I put red Christmas decoration lights in our night light holders yeas ago, including in our bathroom. When I get up in the night, I can go right back to sleep.

That makes a lot of sense. I'll have to try it.

That's great info about the night light. Never thought of that when we were using them. With our oldest, we had to sit in front of her doorway when we would first put her to bed or she would come climbing out.

We found our eldest child had problems relaxing enough to go to sleep. By playing age appropriate stories through the night (Paddington read by Stephen Fry is really soothing for her) she can relax and go to sleep. Better still, if she wakes in the night, it gives her something to focus on to help her go back off. We've been very strict about bedtime because the later she goes to bed the harder it is for her to get to sleep and we've also talked to her about what happens when she sleeps properly (growing; fixing up her bumps and scrapes etc) and helped her to see how much more fun life is when she isn't overtired. By explaining things as simply as possible she has learned how important it is to sleep properly and she will try to do the right thing. It did take until she was nearly 4 before she was regularly sleeping properly tho so hang in there, they do get better and remember by the time they're teenagers you won't be able to get them out of bed!
