3rd grade nose picker

My son is 9 years old and has had a habit of picking his nose and eating the boogers since he first discovered his nose. I have been nonchalant about it, offering him a tissue when I catch him, explaining what boogers are made of, etc. I don't want him to feel bad about what he does and I certainly don't want him to feel like I'm mad or disappointed in him. Today he was telling me that most people at his school know who he is because they know he eats his boogers. It made me sad, because I know he will be picked on and isolated for it. He is also a high-functioning Asperger's child (on the Autism spectrum for those who don't know). The word I would use to describe him is "quirky". Please give me some ideas on how to get him to stop.

I think sometimes You must be "cruel" to your kids,if you don't ,someone else will do it more.
