I never worked out a diet plan. I just made sure that each meal contained two fruit/veg items, one protein and one carbohydrate. I tried to have snacks be mostly fruit and veg because I found that our kids got carb items without trying. It was the fruit and vegetables we had to work at, and the other stuff fell into place easily.
