Help with calming activities

Hi everyone! I have a 4 year old son who is normally very social but when he gets in a situation that makes him uncomfortable such as the doctors office, or going to an activity where he doesn't know many people he throws these ridiculously animated fits that I can't seem to control. He gets so worked up that I'm not sure he can even hear me, I wanted to know if any of you moms out there had any calming or relaxation exercises that could help me control these "anxiety attacks" . Please and thank you :)

Possibly try social stories before the activity so he knows what to expect... Maybe try to teach him a way to tell you non verbally when he needs a break- when he wants to go he needs to squeeze mommy's hand twice. Breathing exercises like they teach in yoga? A stress ball? Sunglasses (it sounds really strange but I've seen it work with more than one kid- something about not having to make eye contact seems to make things less stressful)?

I think the real key is to have him comfortable with the idea before he needs to do it for real.
