I have had experience with a child with ADHD. We did not medicate, but we did try to cut back on all sugars, additives and food coloring especially reds and yellows in kool-aide and nachos and the like. This helped dramatically. We also used fructose instead of sugar. It's a natural fruit sugar, can be used by diabetics also. It stops the pancreas from producing insulin which creates the hyperactivity. I also found a simple and extremely successful program that helps the child focus on the activity at hand and listen better. It is called the happy face token system written about in a book called From Combat Zone to Love at Home. Within two weeks I had a different child. Yes, we still had some issues, but I was able to better cope and amazingly this program states that it is made for mom's happiness with a built in consistency factor. It is and does!

Hi Stacy, what natural meds are you using that helps your kids? my son was diagnosed with adhd and odd about 2 years ago and it has been a battle every day!! i have done so much researching on what foods to avoid and what foods are best for kids with adhd and i came across evening primrose oil and omega 3 1000mg each. i would love some advice as we are really trying but it is so testing!!! any advice would be appreciated.

Try putting him in korate classes or something to help burn energy. I know korate sounds stupid for a hyper adhd child, but they don't only teach as a child would say"cool moves", it teaches disaplaine. All my kids do it. I have an 11 year old with adhd, and a very hyper 6 year old girl. So far it is helping a little, but they just started about 2 months ago. Can't wait to see what the future brings. Good Luck!

I know that the medication rout can be scary. I tryed my 11 year old son on Dexidrin and we all thought it was working great. I pulled him off for the summer and it looks like he just out grew it. I also watch what he eats and add omega 3s. So far this works for him. All I can tell you is to reasearch it and try things till you get a happy balance at school and home. Good luck to you

I feel for you, and I can totally relate. I was there with my son, and we tried the medication route. I know there are meds out there that work for some, but once my son reacted to his, I was "done." We do have my son on an all-natural supplement for adhd, and it works great. I'm a mother of 4 and a special ed teacher and would love to help you out more. Feel free to message me or e-mail me at
