How do you help your child deal with their anxiety?

My 6 year old can get himself pretty worked up about things. He's a thinker but a lot of time he over thinks things and it causes him some anxiety. I try to give him advanced notice of things so it gives him time to prepare but I'm looking for other ideas to help calm his fears.

Hi Amy,
You sound like a savvy mom and I imagine your 6 year old is quite a bright young man. My oldest was quite the intellectual, but struggled with some anxiety issues. Nothing huge, but nevertheless, enough to disrupt certain aspects of her life. She's 28 now and doing well, but looking back I wish I would have recognized what was going on so I could help her deal with her concerns. I'm wondering if you might consider talking through some of the specificis of your son's anxieties with a professional? I work at Focus on the Family and we offer a free counseling consult over the phone with licensed therapists. Here's some information on how to get in touch with a counselor if you're interested. I really think it would be worth your while. God's best to you!
