My 9 year old has trouble focusing in school or in the house if it is something he is not interested in. He is good in Math and science and reading but when it comes to social studies and writing, He is just not interersted. So, he rushes with his answers and makes lot of mistake and ends up having a very bad handwriting.Same when it goes for writing. We just can't understand what he is trying to write. and say. I have been making a responsibility chart for him everyday so that he learns to focus one task at a time and does his best with that task. Please help.

Whenever it comes to learning situations I always think the best thing is a tutor. Either a regular tutor or just a teenager/family member can be very helpful.

They can help focus on his skills at his level and it will be special attention. Everyone does better with focused special attention on a subject.

Of course you could do that yourself but we all get tired and our kids are used to how we talk what we do and having someone special and different can make them more motivated then listening to us try and help them all the time.

You may try to give him some extra, simple, homework practice for writing but you mentioned you already are doing things like that.

Another simple thing is to try to incorporate slightly more fun activities that involve social studies and writing. Require him to go slowly so he doesn't slur the writing but you can try to get him to write a story, or make a poster about a social studies subject from a book at the library. Doesn't have to be every day but just require he work on something like that once or twice a week to make the subject more interesting and less of him constantly struggling to catch up (although you of course have to work on those areas as well...).

I hope some of that is helpful!
