my 9 year old is failing as well.

we promised her a laptop for her birthday if she can get her grades up by then. and then has to keep them up to keep her laptop.

within 2 weeks we've seen her marks go from 40-50% average to 80s and low 90s.

I'd find a motivator and work with that. I really wish we'd thought of the laptop before this

11 is also a age where it is very easy to be pressurd into things. have her friends come over for an evening so you can see what they are like. my sisters grades started dropping and so did her weight, and they couldnt figure it out. so they asked me to talk to her and i found out that one of her friends had convinced her that it was cool to act like you hated school and fail test. she told her thats what popular kids do. she also convinced her that only poplular kids wore a certain size off pants, which is why she wasnt eating. my dad ended their friendship and explained to my sister that to have a family and support them one day she would have to study and be smart to get through college. so talk to her about her friends or talk to her friends parents to see if the same thing is going on with their kids.

I have to agree with Martha, there could be a reason your daughter hates school. 11 is a hard age to be, especially for girls. If she won't talk to you then I suggest you go to her school and talk to her teachers. Find someone your daughter will talk to, a mentor perhaps.

I know this may sound a little strange, but it may not be your daughter. Alot of times parents may think their child doesn't study or work hard enough. My daughter used to love school. She would pick her clothes evey night for school the next day. She made good grades. I recently noticed her grades dropping which made me upset. I asked her about it and her excuse was I was not feeling good. She also within the last few weeks has begged and cried for me to let her stay home. I know this is not the case with every child whose grades drop, but I discovered my daughter has been the victim of many bully attacks. Verbal and Physical abuse is so common nowadays. I mean their are children killing eachother. I would try to find out why her grades are dropping. If it is not a bully situation there are free tutoring programs that you can look into.

My 16 year old hates school too and has since about 5th grade. However, his attitude is, "I have to finish school and go to college to get a job so I'll do whatever I have to do to make good grades so I can finish ASAP". He is taking his first college class in the 2nd semester of his junior class and will be trying to test out of basic math and English when he gets to college full time. Try this approach with your daughter, it might work for her!
