My first grader is having problems with her math and paying attention in school and at home. Can anyone help?

What are some tips on how I get her to what she is told to do without punishments? I just don't know how to do this; my husband and I have hit a brick wall with her because she will cry every time she is asked a question about math or reading while doing her homework.
Am I being to hard on her by asking these questions like what is 2 + 5?

She may have trouble understanding the concepts. The best way to try some hands on situations and present it in a way that is not questioning, as if she is helping you. My middle daughter would get very upset with math when she was that age because she had trouble understanding the concepts, even though she could do what was on her own. She just did not understand that is was the same thing. Kids learn in different ways. Some learn verbally while others are very hands on need to be able do something physically or in pictures to help understand how to do it. Take a math problem like the one you use as an example and get something, like apples, and ask her is she can help you gather the apples you need if you have however many to start with, or have her get how many more to make a certain number. Just stay patient and keep trying.
