My son suddenly hates to go outside...?

I'm the mommy of a wonderful 5 year old boy. He's normal like any other little boy, full of life, energy and at times rather rambunctious. Everything was going fine until a few weeks ago - suddenly, he will not go outside, period! I've tried a million different ways to get him to go out, but he will just get upset and cry if I try to get him to go outside to play in the snow. Previous to this, he loved it, so I am completely baffled.

Another thing that could be related to this, is he's had some issues with peeing the bed (very rare though) and also when he was at school (kindergarten) he would sometimes pee himself while playing outside. This probably happened 4 or 5 times since he's started school so not very often. He's never been one to pee himself, or the bed. So now when we even have to drive 5 mins away to the store, you can tell he's anxious about it because he's scared he'll have to pee - as if he's scared because he won't have access to a bathroom for that time. I could understand this if he had been yelled at when he peed himself or the bed, but that was never the case. I've always been really calm, understanding and patient with him. I guess what I am thinking is, all of this somehow relates to his fear of peeing himself. I've even had him to the doctor thinking he had a UTI or something, but the results came back negative.

I don't know if anyone else has gone through this, or if anyone could offer me some advice, but I've tried everything that I know short of taking him to some sort of specialist to see what the problem really is. I've thought it could be psychological and as far as I can see, I don't know if there is any other explanation. I'd love to hear what anyone else has to say. Thanks in advance!

Since you did take him to the doctors and things came out alright then when you to go out on a car trip you should have him pee before going out. I used a gizmo from the hospital where my sons could pee into when we went a long trip that we could not stop at a gas station. When they are 5 you do have to reinforce to them about going to the bathroom before leaving he house. Even with my boys older (6 and 8) I always make sure then go to the bathroom before going out or going to bed. Boys I think need to be reinforce more so than girls. He may be afraid of going outside because he may feel he has no control of his pee so I would just take the time to reinforce him as much as you can. Good luck.

Kids this young usually do have some irrational fears that we don't understand. See if having him pee before he goes out will help. Have you asked him what is wrong?
