I just posted a long message on another page about this very same topic. Suzanne and Ilene are right... the very best way to get kids interested in reading is to read with them!! Cuddle with them while you do. You want them to think that reading is enjoyable, to associate reading with pleasure in their brains.

The second best thing to do to encourage them to read, is to let them catch YOU reading!! (Again, sending them a message that reading is fun.)

Reading is the key that will unlock school and life for them... but if it's not enjoyable for them they won't want to do it.

There are other things you can do around the house to encourage reading. Label things (light switch, door, chair, sofa, table) and point them out every now and again (NOT every day!). Switch up the reading material -- poetry (Shel Silverstein is great!), non-fiction, magazines, phonics books, books YOU loved as a kid.

Like Suzanne, I have other resources I can share... email me directly if you want any of them!! :)
Happy Reading! -Heather

Read to her. Then read together, then let her read. Make it fun. Find books of some subject that she is very into (whether it be horses, dogs, dolls, cars, barbie, etc).

Erda, You say you ASK her to read? Try the "Let's read together" approach.... Start with simple reading books (BOB books or Dick and Jame)... and read a line, and keep your finger under the words as your read... and then have her use her own finger...

Get some simple books (familiar stories) that are on CD... or DVD interactive books... and READ WITH THEM... have them play "school" with their dolls and toys and work with them. Make it a game.

Talk to your childs teacher and get the kindergarten and 1st grade high-frequency words and slowly build her skills with flash cards.

Make games with the road signs as you go about your daily routine. When shopping ask your girls to find: ice cream, pizza, and other words that are on your list... have your daughters write your shopping list.

I've got lots of resources to share... so please message me if you need more ideas....

All the best...Suzanne
