reading comprehension struggle at 9 years old

My son is a year 4. He can read fluently but struggles to retain the information when asked questions ? I read with him on a daily basis and ask questions but he gets very frustrated when he can't remember. His memory on other areas is really good it's just like he's not remembering because he isn't interested.

Violet, comprehension and retention are two different areas.

Does he comprehend what he reads? (does he understand it) They may go hand in hand, and as he gains in his comprehensive skills, his retentive skills will soon follow, but I'm not positive.

Is he reading at grade level? Is he reading age appropriate materials? These will make a difference. If he's reading at grade level, but trying to read materials that are better aimed towards a 12 or 13 year old, his comprehension will suffer.

So, the daily reading is a good thing, but rather than ask him specifc questions, try asking him to relate the story back to you in his own words. This will be a good first step in retention. As he is more able to tell the story back to you, he's retaining more of what he's reading.
