Skip school. Is it normal .....

My girl is 8 yrs old and she always give excuses not to be in school. In one week she would miss one or two days. Whenever she's at home, she either sleep or watch TV. I did ask her what really bother at school, the answer is simply no. I ask her to review her studies to replace the time that she suppose to be in school but she seems reluctant. Is it this behavior is normal or is it time to worry?

My five year old is playing "I'm sick" at his Gymboree class and hanging out in the bathroom at Gymboree instead of being in class. They all do it if we allow them to get away with it. Tomorrow I'm planning on staying at Gymboree to catch him. The kids need to know that they cannot get "away" with it and that you are on to them ...unless you truly believe that he/she is sick.

I would say it's fairly normal for an eight year old to prefer to stay home and watch TV verses sitting in class studying but that doesn't mean that you should allow it. I tried pulling everything as a kid to stay home from school and sometimes my parents gave in. I thought it was so cool to be able to stay home when I really didn't feel that bad. The more you let her miss, the more she will demand it. My kids are just starting preschool in a few days so I haven't really had to deal with this yet. They will not be missing unless they are absolutely ill. That's just the way it is!

not to be mean, but why are you letting her miss school like that? if she misses too much she will be held back. i really think she is just seeing what she can get away with. she wants to watch tv more than go to school (what kid doesn't?) and you let her. the only reason my daughter (in 2nd grade) misses school is if she's horribly sick or she has some kind of appointment (and i try my hardest to make appointments at the end of the day). we are taking her out of school for 2 days 3 weeks from now for a birthday suprise (we are taking her to disneyland), but that is a very rare thing for us to do (and she doesn't know about it yet). i remember being younger and not wanting to go to school sometimes. unless i had a fever, i was puking my guts out, or i had an uncontrollable cough i went to school - and that is how it is for my daughter too.

but, if you are really worried, you could take her to a child psychologist and see if she may have depression or something similar.
