Summer Activities for School Aged kids?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

I have a 7 year old son and a 9 year old step-daughter and want to keep them entertained while reinfocing reading and math skills. Any ideas? Tips that are budget friendly are also greatly appreciated! Thanx!

Julie just check some older posts as everyday I have a tip how to prevent brain drain. All of the tips I have suggested are budget friendly. One idea is to play hopscotch. The only difference is that you would write words or word families in the squares and ask them to read the word rhyme the word or make a sentence with the specific word. You can play the game any way you like. you can also check funn with phonics tutoring on facebook. I am not trying to sell anything. It just give you tips to help children stay sharp during the Summer. I am passionate about literacy and anything we can do as a community will make our world that much better.

Last summer my kids (8 and 9) wrote their own daily newspaper. They used our digital camera to take pictures, typed up their articles in Word, and learned to use Photoshop to create the format. They emailed their papers to family and friends. Everyone loved it.

*Other than when they asked, I let them be in charge of the project so it didn't turn into "school work". Even with grammatical and spelling errors, they were using their noodles and developing reading/writing skills.
