When to give "the talk" and with how much detail?

I am curious to see what most people say is a good age to teach their children about sex. I feel like kids are growing up too quickly and I may be old fashioned, but we talked to our son at age 12, our other son is pretty "educated" already by his friends, so we have begun discussing it with him (to his dismay)lol. Someone I know said they explained everything to their daughter at age 7. I do want my kids to know all the facts; I'm not trying to hide anything from them. But at the same time, I want them to enjoy being a kid first. Any comments?

If you have open communication in your house I would wait until your sons starts asking you questions about it and then answer truthfully...they will find out in the end but atleast if you answer them honestly and age appropriate ofcourse then they will decide if they want to know anymore.

I think that at your sons age if you dont talk to them about he'll talk to his brother about it or to his friends.... I think that its okie to talk to them about it when you feel it is time.... I that explained to them about it at this age and explaining the seriousness or reprocussions is good as they need to know that it is ok to know about it but its not ok to act out on it at that age... I think that if your uncomfortible about talking to him about it you should ask someone close to him to talk about it so that hes not wierded out by mom talking to him about it :D I remember my mom trying to talk to my now 17 year old brother about it he kept telling her to can it lol but i think if you think hes mature enough and ready to talk about it and you are comfortible with it you should introduce him to basics... My niece is his age and she knows all about it...
