My two youngest boys are almost8 and 6 years. I can ask them to do something or find something and it is like I have not said a word. If they do actually answer me I usually get "I can't find it" without bothering to look or 'I don't want to". But let me whisper from the attic "there are sweets in the pantry" they hear that every time without fail. Comforting to know they don't get any better.

It is annoying. I found that when my son wouldn't listen at the age it was because he was listening to something else, like his iPod or the tv. I simply walked over and turned it off, got down (or up) to his level and made sure he was looking at me when I spoke to him. It didn't take long before he tired of this routine and began listening - most of the time. We also don't allow our children to say "what" if they are out of sight when we speak to them, they have to put down what they're doing and come to us.

I wish I had the poem my mom gave me for my "grown" daughter...it basically explains that it is not against the law to pay 10.00 for shoes rather than 100.00, it is not required to go out and eat rather than eat sanwiches at home, etc and so on be creative and stick by it , i had my daughter at 18 so i was more her friend than anything but when preteens hit i had to toughen up
