Organizing photos

I am terribly behind on my kids scrapbooks because my pictures are so disorganized. Besides taking a week off and getting storage boxes, does any one have any good ideas about how to keep them organized? It seems I can never find pictures when I need them and it makes the limitted time I have to work on scrapbooking very unproductive.

I have my pictures organized digitally as I upload them, but since I don't always have to time to prepare before a scrap event I also like to have hard copies ready to go. I still generally only pick the good shots to print. I love the creative memories photo boxes to store my pics (and I'm not a consultant) What I love about them is they are photo safe, so even if it takes me years to get to my pics they are going to be in good condition. Also, it has small files within the large box to organize however you choose and dividers to add within the small files as well. They have a small box as well that you can pull 3 of the files out of the large box to take to crops or they recently came out with covers for the files so you can take just one at a time. This system has allowed me to really get organized with the many years worth of pictures that I am behind on and still be able to access exactly what I need quickly and efficiently. I can store about a year's worth of photos in one large box and I take a TON of pics.

Just do it! LOL!

What works for me is this: i upload my photos once a month. send them to snapfish to be printed out (they are also saved in my pictures on the computer by month/year), then when i get the printed pictures, i place them in a photo safe box labeled for that month/year. I can fit about 6 months of photos in one box. then i label the outside of the box with the months & year of what's inside. I haven't gotten around to organizing the individual months yet, but that can at least get you on the right track.

Corrie- once you are organized I find that it is easy to stay organized by only printing the pics that you plan to use in the scrapbook and saving the other pics on the computer. It eliminates having heavy storage containers. If you worry about losing them if your computer gets too old or god forbid a fire I suggest saving them on a flash drive and storing them in a fire safe container.

I've found that organization is the key to productive scrapping. I took the time to organize all the photos just like in these other posts. It helps a bunch. Definitly take the photos you want to use for a particular project and seperate them, sometimes I do it down the pages and embelishments so when I have 10 minutes to work I can get something done. Good luck to you.

Hi Corrie. What worked for me was work out what categories you want to organize your photos into. Is it children, holidays, years whatever. When you have decided, buy enough containers for each heading as you think you will need. Get them organized by labelling, if you want subheadings inside (vacations might have dividers inside for years or places, Children may have years as subheadings etc). Then, when you have a spare 10 mins, sit down and file. (If you start with 10 mins it's seems easier to do than as you said find a week, and you probably will spend more than 10 it's just about actually mentally finding 10 mins). You can do this as often during the week as you can (and you may have to do it longer than a week) but once the organizational stuff is done, you can work at it at your own pace. Are your kids old enough to help? Does your partner have time to help for 10 mins (reminiscing over old photos is fabulous to do together). I know it seems daunting before you start, however once you start, you will think this is easier than I thought. Then the systems are organised for new photos printed. And as Tina said, if you are talking digital I've got a whole nother post for that!!!! Good luck and remember all you need to do is take one step at a time.

Corrine~ I see that you said that you bought storage boxes...That is great. I have devided my pictures into each child. so I have one box for my older daughter and one for my younger. Then I have seperated it into different years. Then I have a small box that holds just the pictures that I am working on. So that way I don't have to go searching all over the place. If you have your pic on the computer I have another idea all together for you. If you are interested in hearing about it.

Good Luck and have fun!

Tina
