Has anyone else had to deal with this. My son does crawl and pull up some. He does have some low muscle tone and is in PT...he will stand for a few minutes for his PT but no one else. No one really thinks there is anything wrong but they want to do an MRI to rule anything major out. This scares me..he has to be sedated for an MRI.

Maybe you can help him to walk by holding his hands, so hopefully he'll build muscle tone in his legs. I saw this man at the park the other day with his little girl... she was in some sort of contraption that was like the seat of a baby swing, but the parent holds onto the strings to help the child walk. She was an extremely chunky baby and the guy said his doctor recommended this to help her build muscle to hold herself up.

you should do what you feel-- but better to know now than to wait. keep encouraging him and learn what the PT does for him and use that at home. keep positive and soon enough you will be saying, where did he go, he will be running from you!

Hi Krista-

Hypotonia is just low muscle tone. It is usually the symptom of something else but usually they cannot find a cause for hypotonia. Some children have it so bad that they are just starting to roll over at this age. My son is very tall also but he only weighs about 21 pounds. Does your son have any speech problems? Mine does because the low muscle tone is also in his mouth and tounge. That website is http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Hypotonia...

Hi Katie,

What is hypotonia? I havent heard that one...I keep getting told that most of this is my son's size he's almost 3 ft tall and he's not even 2. He also weighs close to 30lbs. So his muscles just are not strong enough to support him yet. I would love the website.

Hi Krista! My son is going through the EXACT same thing. He has hypotonia and just started crawling on all fours a few months ago. Our pediatrician wants to do an MRI also and we were actually going to but the night before his MRI he got an awful fever and so they wanted to reschedule and I never did because I don't think they will find anything. My little man is in PT and speech therapy and we are actually going to be starting OT pretty soon. He is walking with help now so the PT really does help. I have read that when low muscle tone is diagnosed after their first birthday they never really find a cause. It is nice to now that there is someone else going through the same thing. I have actually joined a support group on-line for people with and parents of kids with hypotonia, just to find out more information. If you would like the website just write back and I will give it to you. Good luck!
