Ok this is my question. Our baby is 27 weeks old, so as far as we are concerned he is 6 months and 3 weeks old, but when i put his date of birth in it came up as 5 months and 4 weeks old. This slightly worries me as this means we have put him on 6 month solids too early and we were going to put him on 7 month old food in about 2 weeks, also my health visitor told me to try him on finger food! I understand that it depends on how many weeks there are in the month, and since he has been born there have been many months with five weeks in which if he was born in another part of the year would be different! My friends baby was born 11 weeks before Luan and up till recently she was counting weeks, now she is counting months which has made her little boy only about 6 weeks older....so who is right, and is Luan younger than i am saying? very confused!

WE GO BY THE WEEKS.  SOME MONTHS HAVE MORE OR LESS WEEKS IN IT.  I THINK THE FOOD DEPENDS ON HOW WELL THE BABY DOES AND WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

Thank you for asking this! I as well got slightly confused at first and have recently just surrendered to going by months, born on the 27 of sept., therefore 6 months on the 27 of march. IYou for sure are not the only one that found this odd.

To put your mind at ease though I really do not feel that a couple of weeks is going to harm any baby. You will know if your child is ready, they have there ways of telling you they are or not. I have tried every so often since mine was just over 4 months and he just didn't seem ready yet so I will keep waiting and trying every 2 weeks or so...no rush.

Thanks guys for all your responses. Am i the only one that thinks its really confusing?

So Jane if you go by weeks, would you give your little one 7 month old baby food from 28 weeks?x

hi there i always count by weeks as there are different number of days in in each month. but the health professionals do it by months. i also find it confusing why they do this. my liitle boy was on solids very early because he was so hungry i dont really use baby food for him unless i'm out, i make his food and its not doing him any harm so i cant see that putting in on the baby food for seven months will hurt. good luck :0)

Your son is 6 months old.  Most doctors say to start solids between 4 and 6 months so as long as he is doing okay with it, you are fine.

Like the last poster, I go by the date when counting months ie.  my son was born on Thursday the 11th so he will be 6 months on March 11, but 26 weeks on Thursday the 12th.

I have always gone month to month from his birthdate ie My son was born on 8 sept 2008, today is the 9 sept 2009 so he is exactly 6 months and 1 day old. I have never gone by weeks except when he was a newborn and it got too confusing. I started him on solids (cereal first) at 4 months old. I wrote out on a calendar his weeks age VERSES his months age up until the age of 1 just to clarify it to myself....it is more precise (in my opinion) to go by their month age.

My little boy is 5 mths & 2 wks and he's been eating baby food since he was 4 mths old. Every baby is different and sometimes they are ready sooner than others. Just try applesauce or pears to help him learn how to eat with a spoon. I know plenty of moms that did the same...he'll either be interested or not. It won't hurt him though!! Mine eats one fruit in between bottles in the morning and then a veggie & fruit for supper. I did just one fruit for about 3 wks before I introduced a veggie. And just for the record...he's NOT over-weight....his dr says he's perfect on the charts.

So am i right in saying Luan will be 7 months in 2 weeks as the baby food says months?

Sorry for sounding really thick!

Weeks and months are different, but the pediatrician goes by weeks.  For instance my son turned 6 months on the 3rd of March, but technically was already 6 months before that, because 6 months started at 24 weeks.  It's the same when you are pregnant - go by weeks not months.
