RIce Cereal

My daughter is 4 1/2 months and we are just now starting rice cereal. She seems to hate it. This is day 3 and she will finally open her mouth to take the spoon but she just spits most of the cereal back out. My husband and I decided to continue to try to feed her the cereal in the mornings and evenings in hopes that she'll "catch on". We're obviously continuing with her regular bottle feedings. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

My baby did the same thing...our dr. said we could put a drop of Karo syrup in it...helps with constipation and makes it taste sweeter. She did like it a lot better after that...but now we've totally switched to oatmeal cereal instead...and she LOVES IT without anything added!

Thank you everyone for your replies. I actually think I'm going to wait a few weeks and try again. Truly, the only reason I started her on the cereal was because of comparisons to other children and their "timelines". I didn't really think she would be ready to begin with. I think as mothers we instinctively know these things.

I started off my son on cereal when he was 3 months. He knew what to do with the spoon right from the start. He was not to fond of the rice at first but I would keep trying it with him. I would dip the nipple of his bottle in the cereal and let him suck it off or I would dip the tip of my finger in the cereal and let him take it that way. It worked he liked it after that but then I tried the oatmeal that was a different story he loved it and I could not get it in him fast enough. But after giving him the oatmeal he will not open his mouth for rice unless there is fruit mixed with it.

Ok my son is 4 and a half months too...he hates the cereal as well. I actually tasted it and heres my theory...it has no taste! When you mix it with formula, it tastes like formula, so your duaghter is prolly thinking, why r u giving me formula with a spoon??

I gave up on cereal and started my son on babyfood already, he has tasted peas and carrots and loves it!

I would suggest after trying the plain cereal for a bit try mixing in a little bit of carrots or sweet potatoes - the sweeter of the vegetables to give the cereal a little flavor.  My son LOVES the carrots.  We have only done carrots, bananas and peas so far.  He does well with it mixed with the cereal.  You just want to try it for three days at least on a new item to watch for any allergies that may occur.  I also read that if you’re LO doesn't like something try it at least 8 times before giving up, not just 3 times.  Their palates are so sensitive so the strong tastes of the new items are just that strong, new and different.  I think mixing with the cereal helps to tone down the strong flavor as well.

Most babies won't like it to start out with. Usually because its so different for them. Your baby has had nothing but fluids since birth...it may take awhile to catch on. Every baby is different. Just because one baby will love it to begin with and another will make the yucky face doesn't mean they aren't ready for it.

We did at first. Our doctor had us mix a tablespoon with a few ounces of breastmilk. After two weeks we tried again. At first he just spit it out, but we would give him a spoonful of cereal then his bottle and repeat until he finished it all. Now he pants if we don't get in his mouth soon enough.

hi,my boy is 4 and a half months and i started him on solids when he was just over three months naughty naughty i know but he was showing all the signs of wanting food and when i tried him on it he loved it,then he went off it for a while so i left it and he is now back on them and loving it,i beleive if your wee one wont eat it, its not a matter of catching on but that she is just not ready for it,when ready she should take to it just like that,i would suggest leaving it and if she starts showing signs of wanting it then try again.i wouldnt keep trying everyday.hope this helps

My son acts like he just swallows it because I'm putting it in his mouth, not because he likes it. I tried waiting until he was pretty hungry one day and it did nothing for him so I went ahead and gave him a bottle. We just keep trying it now and then but I don't think they really care for it at this age. Oh well, they will grow up too soon anyway!

My son is 4 months and does the same thing. Everyone tells me its normal. They just aren't used to having that consistency in their mouth. The best thing is to just keep trying every day. Eventually she will catch on.
