breaking bad habbits..

my son is almost 4 months, and i have had to put mittens on his hands at night and socks on them during the day, because he scratches his head. he does this all the time. when he is eating, falling asleep, laying on the floor playing, in his jolly jumper, everywhere. its like he takes his nails and just kneads the back and top of his head. he has gave himself some pretty bad scratches and no matter what i try, i cant break him of it. any suggestions on why he does this and ways i can try to get him to stop??

could be a what others said about dry scalp or such as that and you could try moisterizor. But it also could be the nervous habit thing as well. but on the other hand it could be a soothing technique as well. At 4 months old if it is a soothing technique you could try giving him something else to try and sooth him. It sounds like he likes to rub his head so maybe try keeping a soft piece of cloth in his hand to rub his head with, something furry or silk or those really soft blankets. My oldest like to take the paws or ears of his soft puppy and rub his cheeks or mouth with he is 10 and still does it. my youngest it was a silk shirt of mine he liked to rub on his face. keep it near him at all times and try to keep it in his hands specially when you see him wanting to rub his head

Try to brush his head with one of those soft baby brushes once a day, if it is an itchy scalp that may help, if not it may be a nervous itch type thing, in that case you should ask you pediatrician.

I really cant be sure, but it sounds like he may have an ear infection. Have you asked your doctor about this? At four months it's unlikely he meanns to scratch his head, but maybe rather to grab his ears! Babies will do this if they have a discomfort,: scratch or pull at the area. Are his ears red or warm? Has this been going on long? This must be upsetting for you! My advice"when in doubt check it out" A visit to the doctor certanly wont hurt. if there is nothing causing the discomfort, maybe a hat for his head? Good luck, hope I helped a little!
