I started by laying down with them at first. They were used to having me close to cuddle when they were in my bed, and were uncomfortable with losing both the familiar environment as well as mommy. So I cuddled in their bed with them as I previously did in mine, first until they went to sleep, then I got up and went to my own bed.

When that worked without problems, I would lay down with them for a bit and cuddle, but not wait until they were asleep but set a certain time, for example the time it takes to read them their favourite story and sing their favourite lullaby and a quick cuddle.

You can shorten the time bit by bit, and eventually a good night kiss will do, although it is a nice tradition to read them a bedtime story or sing a lullaby (eventually they will tell you themselves they are too old for that kind of stuff).

I did it like this with both my kids, and it worked well without tears and feeling bad about it.

I tell mine that they at least have to start out in their beds. Most of the time they stay there but they know that I am always there for them should they get scared.

Quoting Crystal:

Put her in her bed and make her stay there... explain to her that she is a big girl and it's time she slept in her own bed like a big girl does. tell her that you will only be in the next room if she needs you.

Thank you.  That is so hard to do because she will cry all night long. I feel bad, want to go to sleep so I give in. One time I put her in her bed and she stayed up all night. I fell to sleep, and when it was time for me to wake her for school she told me she never went to sleep.
