How to get my 5 year old son to leave the cat alone?

My 5 year old son will not leave our cat alone... I understand he wants to hold it ect.. but I catch him doing things to it like pulling his tail, grabbing and hanging on to his legs ect.. and I cannot get My son to stop mistreating the cat. He will hang on to the cats tail and the cat will hiss at him and my son will not let go... I don't want the cat to not want to be near my son.

My cat is a very good and patient cat and does not scratch or bite unless he really is being hurt. I don't want to get rid of the cat... I have told my son that if he keeps doing this to the cat that I will have to get rid of the cat and we will not be able to get anymore pets not even a fish. I have also explained to my son that if the cat meows or hisses at him that is because he is hurting that cat and that is not nice... I explained to him that that is like when one of friends hurts him by pulling his hair or pinching or hitting him... I asked him if he liked it when his friends hurt him.. He said no .. I then said well just because the cat cannot tell you in words that it hurts... the cat makes noises to tell him that it is not nice to do whatever he is doing to the cat.. and he needs to not do that. He still pulls the cats tail , squeezes the cat ect.. Any one have any creative Ideas???

Create a time out corner and make him stay in it. Remove the cat and if necessary put them in separate rooms until he learns.
