i have a daughter of 4 and i told her the fairy's were coming to take it away to give to their new baby fairy;s and that they would leave her a treat.

a bit like the tooth fairy whom she has heard about in stories,

anyway i got a box for her to put it in come bed time and took it away in the night and left her some girly bits perhaps you could do similer but with something he really wants.

he may cry for a few nights but you have to be strong willed and if you throw them out you wont have a temptation to give in...

If you can't get him to give it up completely, don't stress. My parents tried everything they could to get me to stop sucking my finger. Finally, when I was about eight, I simply told my mom I wasn't going to any more...and didn't! I'm okay...and so are my teeth!

The funniest thing one night I couldn't find it, he had actually been sleeping without it during his afternoon naps, just not at night...he cried for only that one night and after that it was never needed again.  You can't not give them what you do not have...yes the crying will be hard to deal with, but trust it would it not last forever...we actually found it months later in his toy box and he just laughed and put it in the trash. :) My son was almost 1 at the time.

I cut the nipple on them.  Start with just the tip, then every few days cut a little more until there is none left.  You are still able to give it to him and he will eventually realize he doesn't need/want it anymore.  Works like a charm!

well i just reasoned with my son... I came to a compromise then i slowly worked it off.. my start was... you dont need it unless you need to sleep...then i said only at night... and so on....eventually he stopped asking... its a very good way to do it cos they dont feel threatened in any way.

i made my son throw them in the trash and when he wanted them he would not get them cause they were dirty... after a few sleepless nights it was fine... but i have heard of ppl gathering them all up and "giving " them to a new baby, if you know some one who is expecting... and just keep reminding them that they a big boy/girl and the new baby will need them more.... might work
