How do I know if I am having contractions? Im a first time mom and I dont know what the signs are for having contractions. People keep asking me if I lost my mucus plug but I dont even know if I did or not. Plus I dont even know what to pack for me or the baby when it comes to the hospital. Any ideas??

I almost forgot, nursing pads and good bras. Even if you are not breastfeeding you may find that your breasts still create milk and will express (leak) frequently. It can go right through your bra and shirt.

Ok here's the nasty thing, the mucus plug is kind like if you've ever had a vaginal infection of some sort. Weird discharge you may not notice until you go to the bathroom . It can be green or yellowish. The contractions felt like menstrual cramps to me in my lower back. My first pregancy was pre-mature and I didn't go through labor without sedation. My second was induced so the contractions were not natural, that may have made them a bit worse. Some other women I talked to were comparing them to constipation. Really sharp pains mixed with upset stomach.

Hospital stay is usually only a couple of days. You will want some comfy pj's, if your hair is long bring some hair elastics, chapstick, glasses if you wear contacts. Don't forget to put together a small bottle of shampoo and conditioner. When I went to the hospital they didn't provide any. If you have a special face wash or other toiletries you use you will definately want some with you. Lots of undies and t-shirts. For the first few weeks I remember being soaked with sweat when I slept. For the baby, a knit hat (t-shirt material), pacifier if you chose to use one, diapers, wipes (unscented are best), and bottles if you are not breast feeding. The hospital usually starts your baby off on some kind of formula if you are not breast feeding. And of course the take home outfit you want the baby in. Onesies are sooo handy so dont forget to have plenty on hand.

Contractions are tighten of your stomach, they are uncomfortable and get very strong. Mucous plug is white gooy looking spot that breaks loose when your water breaks. You can see it in your undies. Pack your bag with a change of clothing, pads, personal hygiene products, music if you need/like it.Good Luck

Well I did not worry to much about what to take to the hospital. I took an outfit to wear home, some breath mints and normal stuff like tooth brush and hair brush. I also took a book to read but once the contractions are happening you are in to much pain to concentrate on reading. I also made sure to take an outfit for the baby. My hospital supplied me with pads and diapers so I did not have to worry about that.

When your mucus plug comes out it is like a bunch of discharge. It is not always easy to tell if you lost it or not and it can come all at once of over the course of a couple days. I lost mine a week before I went into labor.

As for the contractions, all I can say is you will know. It hurts pretty bad.

When are you due? Good Luck!

oh also remember to take some pens etc.. because they usualy want you to fill out charts to say when the baby has pooped and weed and what time you fed them ... and it also helps you figure things out so take some pens and paper.

make sure you start getting your hospital bag packed!! because i didnt finish packing mine when i had my son and i was 9 days overdue.. i had planned to pack it when i went into labour and then go to the hospital.. i was pritty slack.. but has the hospital given you a list of things you need?? or told you what they supply. you should just make sure you have PLENTY of pairs of underwear!!!! comfy pj's and clothes. slippers or comfy shoes. a few sets of clothes for the baby. nappys. maternity pads. breast pads. get some nipple cream. tooth brush. hair brush.. any other toiletries you may need. make sure you remember your camera and if your keeping a memory book take that.. remember to take money.. so you can buy food and tv. pack some food and lollies etc. ummmm i cant realy think of anything else.. just pack some stuff to keep you entertained because after i had my son i couldnt sleep because i wanted to go home.. and i was so bored sitting in the hospital for 2 days by myself. and the mucus plug i didnt realize when i lost mine. im not sure if i did before my waters broke. so i cant help you there. but yea with the whole contractions if you think you might be having them go into the hospital and say you think it might be happening and they will check and tell you. i did this a week before my son was born but they wernt real contractions.. just the braxton hicks thingies. i guess if you are in ALLOT of pain and they are regular then they are real...
