So, my son is about to hit his first single digit; ONE! But he's already throwing tatrums like a three year old.. He has a pretty hardcore scowl when I tell him no, he throws himself on the floor and cries when I take things away that he shouldn't have, and also will yell (no cry, but a scream like yelling that he does over and over and over again when he doesn't get his way.) I understand that he's too young to express himself with words. He has such a bold personality and I would hate to bring that down, but the tantrums aren't okay! Do I ignore them? Do I do short time-outs? Do I fetal position?

I have a 17 month old girl with some serious opinions at her young age too. we have taught her some basic sign language and are adding new words as her activities increase. It helps the child communicate and decreases some of their frustration. 1 is a tough age, discipline means nothing to them and all it ends up doing is frustrating you. I can barely get her to sit still long enough to change a diaper, let alone get her into time out! As the words are developing the sign language helps clear up what they are talking about.

Omg, this sounds just like my little man who turned 1 a couple of weeks ago.
Sad thing is even though they understand "NO" , they don't understand much else, so trying to teach them that tantrums are not OK is just a waste of time.
Same goes with discipline, they are too young to even begin to understand what you want from them. Its just the age. It's annoying and frustrating, but not much can be done about it
