I'd let him have it if it isn't causing any particular problems. He's likely to give it up on his own by the time he's three. Even if you have to negotiate it away, at three he'll understand better.

if it's only when he goes to sleep, that's not too terrible. my daughter is almost 2.5 yrs old and has a stuffed animal (pig) that she will not sleep without b/c she sucks on its ear as a calming/sleeping inducing mechanism of sorts. don't get me wrong- we HATE that pig but for her young age it's not uncommon for kids to prefer something to suck when they go to bed. if she is still sucking the ear by the time she's 3, I may strongly considering sewing the ear to its head or just cutting it off. your baby boy is still pretty young, you could try to make him stop cold turkey however that could cause a miserable time being he is so young.

My daughter gave hers to the "dummy fairy" when she was 3. It was painless since she was the one to initiate it.
It's up to you if you let him decide when he wants to get rid of it or force him to give it up and deal with the sleepless nights and crying.
If you want to force him to get rid of it then either just throw them all out so they just aren't around or let him throw them out. Either way if he's doesn't want to give them up then be prepared for a few nights of him wanting them.
