3-4 Year Old Woes!

Brandy - posted on 09/29/2009 ( 4 moms have responded )

Just wondering why my son, who will be 4 in February, slept for 6 months through the night straight in his big boy bed and now he is sporatically waking up between 3-6 AM to go potty and/or have me tuck him back in. He goes right back to sleep...just ...frustrating! Why can't he just do this on his own like he used to? He's been extra whiny the past few weeks too. Any ideas/advice?

My daughter who will be 4 in Novemeber. Does the same thing. It usaually is around 4 am. She always has a different excuse. She thirsty, hungry, scared, and some time she says she misses me. If I dont help her she just cries. If I get up and get her what she wants, she will take one drink out of her drink or one bit out of her food. If she is scared or wants me I just tuck her in and give her a hug and she falls right to sleep. She has been doing this for a couple of months. I think we just have to hang in there, it will pass.

I do believe it's just a phase! I have a now 10 1/2 yr. old boy & a 3 yr. old (4 May 31st) & my oldest went through it, & youngest is now too. They both have been wonderful sleepers too. I think at this age they start to dream & alot of time that's what I think causes it. My 3 yr. old wakes up telling me the oddest of stories, & I have talked with alot of mom's with kids this age experiencing the same things, & dreams have been the case there too. So no worries it shall pass. :)

Hi Brandy! I know exactly what your going through, my three year old is doing the same thing and he's been extra clingy the last while... and I think it's the change in routine here cause my oldest is back to school... do you have other kids or have you just done something new I think that maybe both our kids are just looking for reassurance in us because something unfamiliar is going on.....let me know I know that sometimes we feel alone.....

I also have a four year old daughter who does the same thing...I was thinking growing pains maybe? She wakes me or my husband up to ask us if she can go potty...so frustrating. Hang in there! We also have a five year old daughter who sleep walks quiet as a mouse! She doesn't wake up to go to the bathroom...she just stumbles around looking for the bathroom and sometimes mistakes "other places" for the toilet!
