3- year old who has become Possessive of clothes & pullups

[deleted account] ( 4 moms have responded )

I'm losing my mind. In the past couple weeks, my 3 year old has decided that he doesn't want to change his clothes. We can't go from pjs to day or day to pjs without a major ordeal. He refuses. This morning I ignored the struggle until he started whining about breakfast. i told him that when he was dressed, I'd be happy to get breakfast together. When he saw everyone else at the table, he ran off and got his clothes. It's the same with his pullups. If it's his idea, he's okay with it, but if I suggest it.... :( Any suggestions?

Little kids have so little control over their own lives that they sometimes feel the need to take a stand about minor issues like clothing. Try to give him as much choice as possible about what he wears and don't let it turn into a battle of wills. Maybe even let him see the consequences of not getting changed: "Because you took so long to get dressed, we don't have time to go to the playground this morning. Maybe tomorrow you'll get dressed faster."

He's learning how to make decisions for himself and wants choices. Perhaps let him choose from 2 outfits so he feels like it's his idea what to wear and he may be more inclined to get dressed.

Well its sounds like a three year old to me! My son is almost three and he has those moments but its not everyday. Don't ever let him have his way with it or he will know that its possible for him to get his way. Or you could play role reverse. Tell him he is to never change his clothes and that you are giving away his pajamas to a little boy who wants them ..bag them up and put them away. See if he realizes wait, I want my clothes..lol.

I would say it's just a phase, let him work through it. If you don't have to leave the house that day, what's the big deal. I'm a stay home mom and my 4 year old love to be in just in underwear. I don't fight it. If I know someone is coming definatly clothing, but as soon as they're out the door he asks to take the clothing off. no biggie to me. lol
