Hi! I am an In-Home Nanny and single mom so my son is with me 24/7. When I have a date night with my boyfriend (maybe once a week) My Parents watch my 8 month old son. He is great during the day but once it's close to bedtime, he screams for Mama, cries constantly and is unconsolable. Last time I sent along his teddy bear that plays a heartbeat, which he sleeps with everynight. After hours of crying and two very worn out grandparents, he was able to be rocked to sleep with this teddy. I knew they would have some trouble once he got tired but I feel bad for them having to handle this and I don't want them to stop babysitting because of it. Does anyone have any advise on what I or my parents can do to try and make bedtime away from Mom a little easier? I've thought of putting him in a friends daycare one day a week to start him socializing and getting used to being away from me, but I haven't yet. Any comments would help. :-)

Thanks Carolyn! It's relieving to know it's not something I've done by having him with me constantly. (Which is what my family says...He's spoiled and too used to having me around.) The books I've read say that all kids will have some seperation anxiety around this age too. He's very friendly and doesn't mind being with others usually, it's only when he gets tired and ready for Mama and bed. :-) Thats a great idea about the photo. I will give it a try. Thanks again!

My son did the same thing around that age. It was simply a phase and he eventually got past it. I know it's tough and draining. Try sending a picture of you with him so he can still see you. Maybe they can have him kiss the picture goodnight. You might also try putting him to bed yourself at your parent's house before you go out a couple times so he feels like you're still there. Hang in there.
