Symptoms: coughing (three weeks), spit up and hoarseness in voice (the past week).

Coughing correlates with starting on solid foods

went to dr. and he said that it could be acid reflux. wondering if anyother moms have experienced this and how best to deal with it naturally... feed less, more often, meds...?

my twins just went through this when they were born, they would spit up constantly but it was more of a clear fluid that would come up, the doctor put them on two different medications to first see if this was reflux and when the meds didnt work, we ruled it to be lactose intolerance, it runs in the family and with the other symptoms of the hoarseness and congestion we switched to the lactose free soy formula and it seemed to work. All babies will spit up here and there but sometimes changing the formula alone makes the most sense.

my daughter has acid reflux too
we were given meds for it and advised to give her solid foods like porridge once a day either when she gets up or goes to bed or even both to soak up the acid.
so far weve found this has worked really well
she gets up has her meds then a bottle at midday she has solids like a chicken flavoured one with a bottle with her meds then before she goes to bed she has her meds again and some porridge and a bottle so that it settles her tummy and from this she barely has problems with her acid and she also sleeps much better in this routine
hope this helps x

My daughter had lots problems with acid reflux when she was younger too. They gave us meds for her but they just made her feel worse and they rarely stopped her acid reflux. We tried all the different infant cereals but nothing worked. In fact, the cereals were just as bad as everything else. We couldn't afford a wedge for her mattress so we put the head of her crib up on blocks (only a few inches). That seemed to help a little. But the best thing we did was when we decided to just try "real food". So we started giving her pureed squash and baby applesauce instead of the cereals (if it was too thick we would mix it with just a little purified water instead of formula). And, lo and behold, she stopped having choking episodes, vomiting, etc. So different things work for different babies but that is my experience with it.

My daughter was born with acid Reflux. It's not a pleasant experience! Spit up is normal in babies, but a symptom of acid reflux is projectile vomiting. Almost everytime the baby eats. I sugest talking with your doctor about an upper gi. If the test comes back that it is acid reflux, the best option would be medication. My daughter was on prevacid. It worked great! My daughter had it for 11 months. Non-stop crying. She cried for 20 hrs a day, for 11 months. I know what it feels like. You're not alone.

The heavier the food the better it stays in the stomach. I mixed rice cereal with my kids formula 1tsp rice cereal/1oz of formula it really works and they sleep better at nite too. Keep baby upright during feeding and for first half hr after eating. Also use a wedge to elevate the head during sleeping.
