acid reflux and VERY VERY sad baby

Nicki - posted on 05/08/2010 ( 7 moms have responded )

my friend has an almost 3 month old and is currently breastfeeding exclusively and she is diagnosed with acid reflux and is currently on zantac. she seems to be very upset everytime she is not in somebody's arms being held upright. she absolutely HATES the car seat. she will literally scream the entire time. for example we were out for 4 hours and she cried the entire time. she refuses to take a pacifer. when she cries to locks her whole body up. any suggestions. we need help. she does not give up when crying. and by the way she is actually really teething. we see the teeth coming thru. any suggestions or encourage or sympathy is welcome. thank you

thank you for all your advice. she just got some more gas drops, we tried changing the car seat, and put blankets under her to prop her up better when in thr car seat. she really appreciated all the advice!!!

I had this with my daughter and in the end I could not stand the screaming any more and took her to the doctors she was diagnosed with acid reflux and colic. My doctor gave us Gaviscon powder to put in her milk but could be given on a spoon before breastfeeding. This dramatically changed all our lives as she wanted to eat for a change and the crying settled. I was also advised to start small amounts of solids at 10 weeks. Although it is recomended that you wait until 6 months old. I gave her baby rice in the evening when the colic was worse and this settled her tummy and allowed us all to get some sleep. Hope this helps. It's miserable to be so helpless with your little one.

That is aweful! I know how that is as my little girl was the same but she has colic. Has this child & parent gone to the local clinics/dr to be checked out? My baby wouldn't go in a car seat, carry pouch or pram without screaming and locking her body up. She didn't have reflux but had colic (trapped wind) & was never settle til the wind was out - which was me & her dad riding her legs, massaging her tummy etc. It only settled once she hit about 2.5 - 3 months. She (mum) needs to watch what she eats too as if I had any chilli, windy foods eg. onion, broccoli, nuts, soft drinks (soda) etc as it had a terrible effect on my daughter. Please look up what food & drinks can be a help or hinderence. Also....INFACOL, INFACOL, INFACOL. It helps tremendously with wind. I can't praise this stuff highly enough!!
My daughter also had two teeth by 4.5 months. It DOES GET BETTER. My first born was exactly the same & they and you get through it. Best of luck xx

Sounds exactly like what I went through with my daughter...BUT...she was diagnosed with colic and acid reflux. The colic started 1st (around 5 weeks) and then around 3 months she started not eating and was not gaining weight and then was diagnosed with acid reflux. She hated car rides from day 1 and to this day still cries when I try to take her out (she is almost 11 months) And yes, she wanted to be held really tight all of the time..

If she is breastfeeding I would suggest that she talk to the dr. about the colic...she might have to cut dairy from her diet because it could be upsetting her baby's stomach even more. I put my daughter on a hypoallergenic formula and it helped tremendously. If it is just acid reflux, then she will most likely have it until around 6 months or so.

I know it stinks right now but I promise it will get better...I will say a prayer for your friend and if you or she have any questions, please feel free to ask!
