Any ideia how to get a one year old to listen?

My one year old is very hard headed. He does all the "noramal" kid stuff... pulling stuff off shelves, touching everything, putting everything in his mouth. But I've been told they can be "taught".... well, how do you do that?

I've told him "No!" With words and my head.

Sometimes I have even slapped his hand.

I put him in time out....

NOTHING works. :(

My daughter is almost 14 months and she is constantly into everything especially at home. What we do is block off one area she plays in and when she gets too close to the TV or the vent on the floor or the light sockets (I have covers but don't want her touching them) I have told her No with a tap on the hand after a while it started to sink in. I don't scream but use a firm voice and I make sure that my facial features match my tone of voice so there is no confusion. Now I just ask her "are you suppose to have/touch that?" and she gives it to me or stops touching it. Hope this helps!

I am still working with my 21month old. But I found that if I say no and go on and distract his attention else where works well. Example, we were at the library yesturday. He was throwing the books off the shelf, so I told him "no" and "we leave the books on the shelf." and then took him to the toys and puppets until he was occupied there. He used to throw a fit and scream and cry before. A lot of it is with age. It will get better but just hang in there! Hope that works for you! Good luck!
