Any tips on weaning a fully breastfed 17 month old?

My son is 17 months old and has never taken a bottle. He is extremely attached to me and I have never been away from him for more than an hour. I enjoyed everything about my decision to breastfeed, but now he is a lot older and has sixteen teeth! I'm more than ready to wean him and would like to be completely done with breastfeeding before he turns two. HELP!

Hi,

I stopped breastfeeding my daughter at 15 months and worried endlessly before I made the final decision to stop. I gave her a final feed at bedtime, having talked to her about stopping for a while, and the next day she never even asked. Was so easy, it left me feeling a bit like a spare part.

So my advise is to go for it and see what happens, it may not be the trauma that you think.

My son was exactly the same! I'm just trying to keep him more busy because it gets in the way of my studies. Plus, I'm hoping to begin work to help out with the bills by the time he's two, so weaning (for no nursing during the day at least) is necessary if I do get a job! The only other thing I'm worried about is being away from him!! ='( I'm sure it will be harder on me than on him... *sigh

Thank you, ladies! Going cold turkey is not my method of choice. I have stopped the late night feedings and hush him back to sleep, instead. (We co-sleep). He only nurses before nap time and before bed time now. Occasionally he nurses in the morning when I want those extra 30 minutes of shut eye!

I think it would be the same as either weening from the bottle or going cold turkey. Maybe just cutting down on the times on the breast.
