Has she seen a OT?
We are on a wait-list to see one in our city to troubleshoot some behavioural issues with our son.
I have a 4.5 year old Autistic son, and we are very strict with time-outs for undesirable behaviour. Obviously, having Autism means that the line between acting out for personal benefit, and an Autistic episode (meltdown), is not very defined and can be hard to categorize what warrants discipline.
Our son gets time outs if he hits, or throws toys out of anger.

Sometimes, however, he stims very badly.
He will hum loudly, repetitively, and twirl.. or run from the couch to the kitchen table (over and over again). These behaviours we try to ignore. They are his coping mechanisms and I do not want him to think that he is being "bad" for doing something he is compelled to do to regulate himself. We will try to remind him to slow down or if he has been doing if for a long time we will try to redirect, or put him in his room to have a "calm time". We use "Calm time" for when he is very overstimulated and he needs to be taken away from the situation to recenter himself.

We have separate places for each.
Time outs are on the staircase, and Calm time is in his room.
