Autistic Child waking up screaming

Maria - posted on 10/13/2016 ( 1 mom has responded )

I have read posts of parents who are lost as to why their child is waking up in the middle of the night screaming. I'm sure each child and sitauation is different. For my situation and my children, both my autistic child and typical developing child were waking up screaming in the middle of the night and I had no idea why, so I thought of what changed in their diet and daily routine. To make a long story short, it was the Claritin allergy medicine that I was giving them. I took it away and they both slept through the night. I then gave it back and the screaming started again. I spoke to their pediatrician about it and she said that though uncommon, nightmares can be a side effect of allergy medicines such as Claritin, Allegra, etc. Something about the medicine heating up the body and such, which then promotes nightmares, and something like that. Anyway, all I cared about was that I figured out what was going on and was able to fix the problem, so that my children could sleep in peace. I now give them Benadryl for their allergies.
